Nepal is currently draining four glacial lakes in an attempt to mitigate the growing risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). However, scientists emphasize that this measure alone is insufficient to adequately address the dangers posed by these increasingly unstable bodies of water. Effective risk assessment and the implementation of robust early warning systems are crucial components of a comprehensive strategy. Furthermore, careful management of lake outlets and responsible construction practices in potential flood paths are equally vital. The focus must extend beyond simply lowering water levels to encompass holistic planning and preparation. These additional measures are necessary to protect downstream communities in Nepal from the devastating consequences of GLOFs, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Prioritizing these actions is essential for ensuring the safety and resilience of the region.
