A painting stolen by Nazis during World War II has been returned to the heir of its original Jewish owner, following a settlement confirmed by an Argentinian judge. The artwork, a 17th-century portrait titled “Damesportret” by Giuseppe Vittore Ghislandi, was discovered last year hanging in the home of the daughter and son-in-law of a former Nazi, Friedrich Kadgien, after appearing in an online property advertisement. Kadgien fled to Argentina after the war with numerous stolen artworks. After being contacted by journalists, the Kadgiens removed the painting and were subsequently accused of concealing it, but the case will now be dropped due to the restitution. As part of the agreement, the couple will also donate approximately €2750 to local hospitals. The painting will be received by Marei von Saher, Jacques Goudstikker’s granddaughter-in-law, who has dedicated decades to recovering stolen works from his collection, and plans to temporarily exhibit it at the Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires.
