A Wassily Kandinsky painting, stolen from a Jewish family in Amsterdam during the Nazi era, has been sold at Christie’s in London for £27 million (approximately €32 million). The artwork, part of the estate of the late Willem Hiegentlij, had been the subject of restitution claims. The family lost possession of the painting during the Second World War. Christie's confirmed it conducted due diligence and was able to provide a provenance report demonstrating the artwork's history and ownership. The sale price reflects the painting's significance and the long-fought battle for its return to rightful ownership, representing a bittersweet victory for the Hiegentlij family. The auction house facilitated the transaction, bringing closure to a decades-old case of cultural theft stemming from Amsterdam.
