The leader of Mozambique’s PODEMOS party, Albino Forquilha, marked the nation’s 51st Independence Day by urging a period of national reflection. He acknowledged the progress made since 1975 but emphasized that the promise of improved living conditions for all Mozambicans remains unfulfilled, citing persistent poverty and socioeconomic difficulties. Forquilha called for a thorough evaluation of the country’s trajectory over the past five decades, linking the independence celebrations to a critical assessment of unresolved issues. He highlighted the current political climate as an opportunity to strengthen national dialogue and forge consensus-based solutions. Forquilha advocated for the inclusion of all sectors of society – political parties, civil society, businesses, and academia – in defining the path towards development. He stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of Mozambique’s challenges through long-term reforms and solutions for future generations.
