Private security workers in Mozambique are calling for stricter regulation of the Private Security Law and increased oversight of companies to ensure labor law compliance. The demand arose during a meeting convened by the Maputo City Prosecutor's Office, bringing together worker and employer representatives. Mozambique’s security sector comprises over 300 legally recognized companies, yet faces significant challenges regarding worker rights and social security contributions. Companies in the sector are among the largest debtors to the National Social Security Institute (INSS), with accumulated debts exceeding 120 million meticais as of June last year. The workers’ union attributes ongoing irregularities to legislative weaknesses and a lack of adequate regulation. The Prosecutor’s Office currently has over 300 cases pending against security firms failing to remit worker contributions to the INSS, with concerns raised about companies closing without settling debts, leaving workers unprotected.
