Mozambique’s Minister of Agriculture has warned the country must prepare for the anticipated El Niño weather pattern, forecasting drought in the south and central regions and heavy rainfall in the north. During a visit to Sofala province, Minister Roberto Albino met with farmers and livestock breeders who voiced concerns about access to financing, agricultural inputs, and veterinary medicines. Producers highlighted the need for financial assistance to recover from extreme weather events and improve livestock quality through access to improved breeds. Albino acknowledged these challenges and emphasized the importance of adapting to inevitable climate change impacts, advocating for farmer cooperatives to improve access to financial support and veterinary services. The World Bank representative, Fily Sissoko, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting Mozambican agricultural independence and productivity. The visit aimed to address key obstacles hindering agricultural and livestock development in the region and explore collaborative solutions.
