Dr Shauna Burke, an Associate Professor at the University of Leeds, has returned from climbing Mount Everest after being diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Having first summited the world’s highest mountain in 2005, Dr Burke’s recent ascent represents an extraordinary personal challenge and a commitment to living fully despite her diagnosis. She is now determined to conquer the world’s other 13 peaks exceeding 8,000 metres. Dr Burke finds peace and vitality in the mountains, choosing to defy the limitations imposed by her illness. Her experiences are also contributing to research on exercise, resilience, and improving quality of life for those facing serious health challenges. She hopes to demonstrate what is possible through a dedication to living a full life even when faced with an incurable condition.
