New measurements from the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) indicate a significant decrease in toilet paper litter in the Swedish mountains. While overall litter remains a concern, discarded cigarette/tobacco packaging – specifically “snus” (a moist form of smokeless tobacco popular in Sweden) – has become the most prevalent form of waste found in the mountain regions. The decline in toilet paper suggests increased responsible behavior among hikers, potentially due to awareness campaigns. However, the rise of snus waste presents a new challenge for environmental efforts. STF officials are now focusing on addressing the issue of snus packaging pollution. The data highlights a shift in the types of litter impacting the fragile mountain ecosystems. Further investigation is planned to understand the reasons behind the increase in snus waste.
