The president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque, Salah Sarsour, has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention following a federal judge’s order. Sarsour, a Palestinian American, was detained in March. Judge James Patrick Hanlon ruled that Sarsour presented a “substantial” claim that his detention was retaliation for exercising his First Amendment rights to free speech, potentially making his detention unlawful. The judge, appointed by former President Donald Trump, issued the release order on Thursday. The case centers on allegations that Sarsour’s protected speech was a factor in his detention by ICE. Further legal proceedings are expected to address the core First Amendment claims.
