Moroccan academic Mohammed Salem Cherkaoui called for the development of a distinct “literature of the Sahara” during a forum in Guelmim. He emphasized the need for this literature to accurately convey the multifaceted nature of the Saharan region to future generations of researchers and students, specifically from a Moroccan perspective. Cherkaoui made these remarks at the opening of the third Researchers’ Forum on Moroccan Sahara, hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir. The forum aims to foster academic discussion and research concerning the Moroccan Sahara. Cherkaoui’s intervention highlights a desire to cultivate a literary tradition that reflects the unique cultural and geographical characteristics of the region. This initiative seeks to shape the narrative surrounding the Sahara through a distinctly Moroccan lens. The event provides a platform for scholars to contribute to this growing body of work.
