Mongolia has significantly expanded its international weather data contribution, increasing the number of reporting stations from 63 to 138. This expansion, announced by the National Agency for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring, is expected to dramatically improve short- and medium-term weather forecasting accuracy. The country has registered 75 stations with the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) OSCAR/Surface system, making data from all 138 stations available for international exchange. Currently, 102 of these stations are actively utilized by leading global forecasting centers. This initiative will enhance weather predictions across Central Asia and Eurasia, providing more accurate forecasts. Improved data will also facilitate earlier and more precise detection of hazardous weather events like droughts, floods, and dzuds (severe winters), enabling timely warnings to citizens and herders. The upgrade aligns with WMO’s open data policy and strengthens Mongolia’s role in global climate and weather observation.
