A migrant ship capsized off the coast of Djibouti in East Africa, resulting in the confirmed deaths of at least 109 people, with another 116 remaining missing. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed the incident occurred overnight between Thursday and Friday, near the coastal town of Obock. The vessel, carrying 350 passengers, was traveling from Obock to a port in Yemen, a relatively short journey often used by migrants seeking passage to wealthier Gulf states across the Arabian Peninsula. Over eighty people survived the disaster and have been identified as originating from Ethiopia, a neighboring country of Djibouti. The IOM notes the tragedy underscores the perilous conditions faced by migrants along this route, with 900 having lost their lives or gone missing last year alone. Despite ongoing conflict in Yemen, significant numbers of migrants continue attempting the crossing from Djibouti; the IOM reported 20,000 arrivals from Ethiopia into Djibouti in the past month.
