Celebrations in Mexico City following the national team’s qualification for the round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup turned deadly, with at least four people losing their lives. Authorities report that two women, aged 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation due to overcrowding. A 30-year-old man also died after suffering a seizure amidst the celebrations. The tragedy occurred after Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium, marking their first knockout stage win in 40 years. Over a million fans gathered in the streets, particularly around the Angel of Independence monument. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her solidarity with the victims’ families and assured them of government support.
