US authorities have indicted four members of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) for attempting to purchase firearms and ammunition in the Czech Republic. The four men were arrested in the Czech Republic in June, and two have already been extradited. Extradition proceedings are underway for the remaining two suspects. According to the US Department of Justice, all four face potential life sentences if convicted. The case highlights the cartel’s efforts to source weapons internationally and the cooperation between US and Czech authorities in combating transnational crime. The investigation uncovered a scheme to illegally acquire weapons which were intended for use by the cartel in Mexico. This operation underscores the reach of Mexican drug cartels beyond their home country.
