Meta has reached an $18 billion settlement with multiple U.S. states regarding allegations that it contributed to youth mental health problems through addictive practices on Facebook and Instagram. As part of the agreement, Meta will implement restrictions on teen users’ daily time spent on both platforms, capping it at two hours. Furthermore, usage will be blocked entirely between midnight and 6 a.m. unless explicit parental permission is granted. The settlement aims to address concerns about the harmful effects of social media on young people's well-being. This deal requires court approval and represents one of the largest settlements of its kind involving a tech company. Meta did not admit wrongdoing as part of the agreement, but the changes mark a significant shift in how the platforms are used by minors. The company will also improve its safety features and conduct research into youth mental health impacts.
