Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is being taken to court by the Dutch Online Gambling Association (VNLOK) over the proliferation of illegal gambling advertisements targeting Dutch users. An investigation by *De Telegraaf* revealed over 70,000 such ads on Meta’s platforms in recent months, with only 5% being removed. VNLOK expressed frustration with Meta’s lack of action against these malafide advertisements, which often misuse the images of prominent figures like Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo without consent. The organization argues that Meta is failing to protect Dutch citizens from potentially harmful gambling practices. In addition to the lawsuit, VNLOK has filed a complaint with the European Commission, seeking further intervention. The case highlights growing concerns about the regulation of online gambling advertising and the responsibility of social media platforms to enforce advertising standards.
