Investigations are underway in five countries regarding allegations that individuals from Italy and other Western nations paid mercenaries to target and kill civilians during the siege of Sarajevo in the early 1990s. Journalist Ezio Gavazzeni began investigating these claims after encountering persistent rumors. His research suggests a deliberate scheme where individuals funded others to carry out shootings in the besieged city. Gavazzeni’s book, “Weekend Snipers – In the Trail of the Sarajevo Manhunters,” detailing his findings, has recently been published in Hungarian. The accusations represent a disturbing potential low point in modern history, suggesting a calculated willingness to inflict harm on civilians for financial gain. The investigations aim to uncover the extent of the network and identify those involved in the alleged payments and killings. The case highlights the dark side of the Bosnian War and the potential for foreign involvement in atrocities.
