Mercedes-Benz is piloting a new technology allowing electric vehicles to supply energy back to homes, effectively using surplus solar power generated during peak sunlight hours. Currently, excess energy is fed back into the grid, but this will become less financially advantageous when the Netherlands’ net metering scheme ends in 2027. The system utilizes a fast-charging connection to enable the vehicle to function as a temporary home energy source. This allows owners to utilize self-generated solar energy, rather than exporting it, potentially reducing energy costs. The initiative focuses on maximizing the benefits of renewable energy production for homeowners. The technology aims to address the changing energy landscape and incentivize self-consumption of solar power. This vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability represents a step towards greater energy independence and grid stability.
