A male Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin, aged between 12 and 15, was found dead in Kandal province, Cambodia, on Friday. The Fisheries Administration (FiA) confirmed the dolphin died after becoming entangled in fishing gear. The body was discovered upstream of the Svay Chrum ferry crossing, near Arey Ksat. This incident highlights the ongoing threat to the critically endangered Mekong dolphin population. Entanglement in fishing nets remains a primary cause of death for these dolphins. Conservationists are urging stronger measures to combat illegal fishing practices and protect the remaining population, estimated to be fewer than 90 individuals. This loss represents a significant setback for conservation efforts.
