Serbia’s electronic media sector continues to operate without full regulatory oversight due to the ongoing failure to form the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM). The absence of a fully constituted council prevents the imposition of sanctions on media outlets, even in cases of potentially problematic reporting. This situation has persisted for a considerable period, leaving a gap in media accountability. The government has yet to present a solution for establishing the council, raising concerns about media freedom and responsible journalism. Political stakeholders have been unable to reach an agreement on appointments, contributing to the deadlock. This lack of regulation impacts the ability to address issues related to media bias, disinformation, and adherence to professional standards. The delay raises questions about the commitment to a transparent and accountable media landscape in Serbia.
