McDonald’s Netherlands has been warned by the Netherlands Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport (ILT) for violating regulations regarding single-use plastics. Despite initially complying with the 2024 ban on single-use plastic cups and containers, McDonald’s resumed offering disposable cups for both in-house and takeaway customers. The ILT considers this a serious offense given McDonald's status as a major industry leader, distributing 175 million cups annually. McDonald’s has pledged to introduce reusable cups by early 2027 to avoid penalties. Failure to comply will result in fines of up to €3.75 million. The move aims to reduce plastic waste and environmental damage caused by improper disposal and incineration of plastic cups.
