A large fire completely destroyed a Spar supermarket in Matola, Mozambique, on Thursday evening, causing significant material damage. The fire erupted around 9 PM and consumed the building, including its warehouse and stored goods. Firefighters continued extinguishing remaining hotspots inside the building Friday morning. Maputo Province Governor Simão Tule stated that it was too early to determine the cause of the blaze and a full assessment of the damage would follow the completion of firefighting efforts. Tule emphasized the supermarket’s importance to the local community and expressed regret over its loss. Fortunately, the establishment was insured, potentially easing the path to recovery and eventual reopening. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
