Conservationists in Malaysia are working to protect the endangered spectacled langur monkey population facing increasing threats. Deforestation and urbanization are fragmenting the monkeys’ habitat on Penang Island, leading to more frequent and dangerous interactions with humans and vehicles. The Langur Project Penang is addressing this issue by constructing a network of aerial walkways, or “sky bridges,” to reconnect fragmented forest areas. These bridges allow the langurs to safely traverse roads and developed areas, reducing the risk of vehicle collisions and maintaining genetic diversity within the population. The project aims to mitigate the impacts of habitat loss and provide a safe passage for the monkeys. This initiative represents a proactive approach to wildlife conservation in a rapidly developing region.
