87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, a central figure in Spain's recent housing crisis protests that led to a snap election, has died in Madrid. The news has devastated protesters demonstrating in the capital and intensified their anger. Abascal had been hospitalized since being forcibly evicted from her home of over 70 years on September 23rd, following a property company’s purchase and subsequent drastic rent increase. Following the eviction, activists began a sit-in in the Puerta del Sol square, demanding solutions to housing shortages and soaring rents. After her death, thousands marched from Puerta del Sol to parliament, chanting “This is not a death, this is a murder!” Trade unions have announced a nationwide general strike on November 11th regarding the housing issue. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez introduced legislation to halt evictions and cap rent increases, but its rejection triggered the announcement of a snap election on November 29th.
