Finland has provided a maternal package – a box filled with clothes and essential items for new mothers and babies – for almost 90 years. Johanna Hautamäki, a resident of Luleå and Finnish citizen, discovered she was ineligible for the popular package as she had lived abroad for too long. Determined to obtain one, she began searching for a way to purchase it, despite the high cost. The “baby box” from Finland is highly regarded and seen as an important resource for new parents. Hautamäki’s experience highlights the value placed on this tradition and the lengths parents will go to access such support. She has since purchased a box and intends to buy another.
