A grey copper shark has become a local celebrity in the South Korean port city of Busan after swimming in a city canal for nearly two weeks. Affectionately nicknamed “Bukangi” by residents, referencing Busan, the shark was first spotted on September 18th and is believed to have followed prey from the sea but lost its way back. Initial attempts to guide the 3.5-meter shark back to the ocean using water jets from five boats were unsuccessful as the shark skillfully evaded them. Despite the challenges, an estimated 600,000 people have flocked to catch a glimpse of the unusual visitor, boosting the city's popularity. However, authorities emphasize the need for the shark to return to the sea due to limited food sources in the canal, despite it showing no immediate health concerns. A new rescue attempt, utilizing a 50-meter net and water jets, is scheduled for Friday and will be live-streamed on YouTube, as locals begin to say their goodbyes to Bukangi.
