Lisbon’s transport operator, Carris, will rebuild the Elevador da Glória funicular after it was destroyed in a tragic accident last September that claimed 16 lives. Carris chairman Rui Lopo announced the plans on Monday, emphasizing that the new funicular will prioritize the highest safety standards. The original funicular, a historic landmark, was severely damaged in the incident and deemed irreparable. Reconstruction efforts are underway with a goal of restoring this key piece of Lisbon’s transport infrastructure. Authorities aim to have the rebuilt Elevador da Glória operational by 2029. The rebuilt funicular will serve both residents and tourists, offering a scenic route through the city’s hills.
