A newly discussed psychological state, termed “limerence,” describes an intense, yet not-quite-love, romantic obsession. Characterized by intrusive thoughts and a strong desire for reciprocation, limerence is surprisingly common, affecting roughly half the population at least once in their lifetime. Though often mistaken for love, it differs in its consuming and sometimes unrealistic nature. Experts note limerence isn’t necessarily indicative of a problem, but understanding it can provide clarity during emotionally turbulent experiences. The condition involves a focus on the ‘limerent object’ – the person of infatuation – and is fueled by hope and uncertainty. While intense, limerence doesn’t equate to a healthy, balanced relationship.
