Peruvian authorities have arrested 25 individuals suspected of belonging to a criminal network known as ‘La Red del Silencio’ (The Network of Silence). The group is accused of extorting over 190 bus and taxi drivers in Lima and Callao. Investigations revealed drivers were forced to pay daily sums, up to 70 Peruvian Soles (approximately $18 USD), to avoid violence. Threats were delivered via messaging apps, including images of weapons and explosives. The extortion scheme aimed to control the transportation sector through intimidation and financial coercion. Police operations targeted key members of the network, disrupting its operations and offering relief to affected drivers. Authorities continue to investigate potential connections to other criminal activities.
