Lima and Callao have initiated a pilot program for a unified payment system across public transportation. The new system, managed by the ATU (Autoridad de Transporte Urbano), will initially be tested on urban buses. This marks the first step towards implementing an interoperable transit card for the metropolitan area. The goal is to simplify travel for the thousands of daily commuters in both cities by allowing a single payment method for various transport options. Authorities anticipate the system will improve efficiency and accessibility. Further expansion to other modes of transport is planned following the pilot phase evaluation. The unified system aims to modernize Lima and Callao’s public transport infrastructure.
