The scans uncovered previously unknown ancient cities, conical pyramids, and complex systems of roads and canals. This discovery challenges previous understandings of pre-Columbian settlements in the area, indicating a far more sophisticated and densely populated civilization than previously believed. Researchers say the technology allowed them to “see” through the dense forest canopy to map the archaeological remains. The findings offer a new perspective on the historical landscape and the societies that once thrived there.
