Archaeologists are urgently working to safeguard the ancient Greek cities of Cyrene and Apollonia in eastern Libya. These historically significant sites, rivaled only by ruins in Greece, have suffered extensive damage from ongoing conflict, looting, and a severe storm in 2023. Founded around 631 B.C., Cyrene was a major center of Greek civilization in North Africa. The current efforts focus on stabilizing structures and preventing further deterioration, as the sites are increasingly vulnerable. Experts express concern that without immediate intervention, irreplaceable historical artifacts and architectural features will be lost. The situation highlights the challenges of preserving cultural heritage in regions affected by instability and natural disasters.
