Latvia’s Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis has issued an order requiring all theatre marketing materials, including posters, advertisements, and websites, to be exclusively in the Latvian language. Puntulis, representing the nationalist National Alliance party, clarified that the new rule will not result in theatre closures or censorship of content. The mandate applies specifically to how theatres present themselves to the public, not the language of performances themselves. This decision aims to promote the use of the official language and strengthen Latvian cultural identity. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact on Russian-language theatre audiences and accessibility. The Minister insists the order focuses on outward-facing communication and doesn't impede artistic expression within performances. Implementation is effective immediately following the Midsummer holidays.
