Latvia is confronting a growing waste problem as household waste generation rises significantly. The nation’s largest landfill, Getliņi, is projected to reach full capacity within the next decade, according to its chairman Imants Stirāns. Over the past ten years, per capita household waste has increased by approximately 100 kilograms annually, exacerbating the issue. This rapid increase in waste threatens to overwhelm existing infrastructure and necessitate urgent solutions. The Getliņi landfill operator warns that, even with optimistic projections, space will be exhausted in ten years. This situation highlights the pressing need for improved waste reduction, recycling, and alternative waste management strategies in Latvia to avoid an environmental crisis. Addressing this issue is critical for the country's future sustainability.
