The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly passed a Rs2.17 trillion (approximately $13.7 billion USD) budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 after approving all departmental grants and rejecting cut motions. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi declared the upcoming year will focus on peace, prosperity, and development within the province. A significant portion of the budget, Rs40 billion, is allocated to bolstering the police force to improve security and infrastructure. Peshawar, a PTI stronghold, received the second-largest budgetary allocation. The government plans to introduce the “Insaf Buzurg Card” providing free travel on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system for citizens over 60. CM Afridi also criticized the federal government’s funding of the Khyber Institute of Child Health, pledging to complete the project through provincial financing. Completion of a dam in Swat is pending federal approval of a necessary certificate.
