The Parliament of Kosovo has taken a significant step toward altering the legal framework surrounding the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office, commonly known as the Hague Special Court. Members of Parliament (MPs) approved major amendments to the law governing the court in a first reading. This action follows recent convictions of former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), sparking debate about the court’s impact. The proposed changes aim to address concerns regarding the court’s operation and its relationship with Kosovo’s legal system. However, the amendments require a second vote in Parliament to become law, meaning the process is not yet finalized. The outcome of this second vote will determine whether Kosovo alters its legal obligations towards the Hague-based tribunal. This move reflects ongoing tensions between Kosovo’s government and the court established to investigate and prosecute alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during and after the Kosovo War.
