A protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in Khyber’s Bara tehsil escalated into violence on Tuesday, resulting in clashes with police and the arson of government buildings. The demonstration was held in response to the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkwa and a state of emergency in twelve districts, including Khyber, effectively removing PTI’s Sohail Afridi from his position as chief minister. Initial attempts by police to disperse the crowd with baton charges and tear gas were overcome by reinforcements brought by local MPA Abdul Ghani Afridi. Witnesses reported protesters physically assaulting police officers, who then responded with tear gas and live rounds. At least five protesters and four police officers were injured, with over a dozen injured individuals admitted to Hayatabad Medical Complex. Fifty people were arrested, and the National Database and Registration Authority’s office and part of the Rescue 1122 building were set ablaze.
