Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kenya has achieved a medical first by successfully completing the nation’s inaugural Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) procedure. This minimally invasive technique was performed by MTRH’s Interventional Radiologists on a patient suffering from advanced liver disease and dangerous complications related to portal hypertension. The TIPS procedure creates a new pathway for blood flow, alleviating pressure in the portal vein and mitigating life-threatening issues. This advancement significantly expands access to specialized care within Kenya, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad. MTRH’s accomplishment represents a major step forward in the country’s healthcare capabilities and offers a promising new treatment option for individuals with severe liver conditions. The hospital anticipates performing more of these procedures to address the growing need for advanced liver care.
