Kenya’s Parliament intends to lobby for the inclusion of Aflasafe, a product designed to prevent aflatoxin contamination, within the nation’s fertilizer subsidy program. This move aims to improve food safety standards and mitigate health risks associated with aflatoxins, which can cause chronic diseases. John Mutunga, Chairperson of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock, stated the Parliament will expedite this inclusion. Currently, the fertilizer subsidy program does not cover Aflasafe, limiting its accessibility to farmers. Advocates believe integrating Aflasafe into the subsidy will encourage wider adoption and reduce the prevalence of aflatoxins in staple foods. The initiative reflects a growing concern over the public health impact of aflatoxin exposure in Kenya. This parliamentary support signals a potential shift in government strategy towards proactive food safety measures.
