Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua was denied entry into Uganda upon arrival at Entebbe Airport on Monday. Karua is part of the legal team representing Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye, arrested in November 2024. She had travelled to Uganda to support fellow opposition politician Erias Lukwago, a former Kampala mayor, who was recently arrested, mistreated, and detained. Karua described her experience as “humiliating.” Regional legal networks have condemned the expulsion as a violation of East African Community treaties guaranteeing free movement. The incident raises concerns about the treatment of legal professionals and political opposition within Uganda, and potentially impacts regional cooperation. This action follows a pattern of reported restrictions on opposition activities in the country.
