Authorities in Karachi have imposed Section 144, a legal provision restricting public gatherings, until October 20th. The decision, made by the Karachi commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, aims to prevent protests and demonstrations that officials fear will disrupt public life and worsen the law and order situation. Reports indicate that ongoing protests are causing significant traffic congestion and raising security concerns, impeding emergency services and access to hospitals. The order prohibits rallies, processions, sit-ins, and assemblies of more than five people within Karachi Division. Officials state there is a “reasonable apprehension” that such gatherings could obstruct roads, disrupt commerce, and lead to untoward incidents. The restrictions are intended to maintain public peace, safeguard citizens, and ensure the smooth flow of traffic and essential services in Karachi.
