Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has accused the government of going back on its word after seeking his help to mediate with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). Fazl detailed how both government officials and opposition leaders approached him to resolve rising political tensions that threatened to escalate into an emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He stated that after returning from Umrah on October 7, he was asked by opposition leaders and subsequently federal ministers to intervene in the situation stemming from the PTI's planned long march to Islamabad demanding the release of Imran Khan. While the PTI’s march remained within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Fazl’s request, and talk of emergency rule was initially deferred, the government later insisted the march be called off as a precondition for further discussion. Fazl recounts being invited to the Prime Minister House by Shehbaz Sharif, but felt the government had already decided on its course of action. He alleges the government ultimately reneged on commitments made during these discussions.
