A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, following a 5.9 magnitude tremor earlier in the evening. The initial quake occurred at 10:45 pm local time at a depth of 40 kilometers. Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) measured the seismic intensity at 4 on a scale of 7, indicating a moderate level of shaking. Fortunately, a tsunami warning was not issued following either quake. Initial reports indicate approximately 40 people sustained injuries as a result of the earlier 5.9 magnitude tremor. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and monitoring for potential aftershocks.
