Japan has begun flight testing an air-launched version of its Type 12 anti-ship missile, significantly extending its ability to engage targets at longer ranges. The upgraded missile reportedly boasts a range of approximately 1,000km (620 miles). Photos from Gifu airbase show an F-2B fighter jet equipped with inert versions of the missile, publicly confirming the testing phase. This development is widely interpreted as a response to China’s growing naval power and a bid to establish a counterstrike capability. The missile’s extended range enables Japan to potentially target warships at sea, enhancing its defense posture. This move signals a shift in Japan’s defense strategy towards a more proactive and offensive approach. Further testing and deployment are anticipated as Japan continues to bolster its military capabilities.
