Indonesia has reopened Jakarta’s international airport and four other airports following the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano this weekend. The eruption prompted the closure of eight airports as a safety precaution, impacting over 340,000 travelers and causing nearly 3,000 flights to be delayed, rescheduled, or canceled. As of today, five airports, including Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport, are operational again, with ash clouds having dispersed due to wind changes. Indonesian transport authorities are still assessing the safety of 178 stranded aircraft at Soekarno-Hatta airport before they can resume flights. While some flights resumed from another airport yesterday, the reopening of the remaining two airports remains uncertain. Anak Krakatau is one of approximately 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, and further eruptions were observed today, with unclear implications for air travel.
