Italy has introduced border controls for travelers arriving from Spain, subjecting them to document checks at airports and ports. The measure follows a meeting between the Italian interior ministry and the immigration and border security committee. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated the temporary suspension of the Schengen Agreement is vital for citizen safety and European border defense. This action is a response to a recent surge in migration, specifically the arrival of 60,000 people at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. While roughly 50,000 have voluntarily returned to Morocco, at least 67 lives have been lost. Tajani previously suggested Spain’s potential exclusion from the Schengen area due to the situation in Ceuta.
