Ireland has indicated it would support European Union sanctions against the Aughinish Alumina plant if a definitive link to the Russian war effort is established. Minister of State Seán Canney stated the country would comply with any EU sanctions measures. The Aughinish Alumina plant, located in Limerick, is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and is currently owned by Rusal, a Russian company. Concerns have been raised regarding the plant’s potential contribution to Russia’s military capabilities. Canney emphasized Ireland’s commitment to upholding EU policy and taking necessary action. He noted that a formal investigation would need to confirm any direct connection before sanctions are implemented. The Minister’s comments reflect growing international scrutiny of assets linked to Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
