Iran and Oman are currently in negotiations to establish a temporary shipping corridor and clear mines within the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. These discussions aim to address disruptions to global oil and gas trade caused by regional conflict, which began in late February. A previous US-Iran memorandum of understanding, mediated by Pakistan, to reopen the strait has stalled, leaving the details of administration and maritime services to Tehran and Muscat. Recent talks between Iranian and Omani foreign ministers have focused on establishing this temporary corridor, with hopes for a swift announcement of “practical arrangements” to ensure safe navigation. The proposed framework would route incoming ships through Iranian waters and outgoing ships through Omani waters. Officials suggest a 30 to 60-day timeframe to finalize a permanent solution following the implementation of the temporary corridor.
