An invasive, frost-resistant cactus – Opuntia – is spreading within the Pálava Protected Landscape Area in the Czech Republic. Conservationists have observed the North American plant beyond Děvín and Tabule, now finding it at Svatý kopeček near Mikulov. Representatives of the Pálava Protected Landscape Area Administration reported the spread via Facebook, highlighting the cactus as a threat to the unique flora of the Pálava steppes. The cactus has the potential to displace native, rare plant species within the region. This expansion raises concerns about the biodiversity of the Pálava region and the need for management strategies. The situation is being closely monitored to assess the full extent of the invasion and develop appropriate responses. Further observation and potential intervention are planned to mitigate the impact.
