New statutes for the Portuguese National Institute of Emergency Medical Services (INEM), published Friday, will reshape the organization of emergency response. The changes involve the elimination of regional delegations currently in place. Instead, four National Coordination Centers (CODU) will be established in Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, and Loulé. These CODU centers will assume responsibility for coordinating emergency services across the country. The restructuring aims to streamline operations and improve efficiency in responding to emergencies nationwide. The new statutes are set to take effect on Saturday, marking a significant shift in how INEM manages its resources and delivers emergency medical care. This overhaul intends to centralize coordination for better national coverage.
